1936                    Mercedes-Benz 540K

One of the most beautiful of all cars from the 1930s, and certainly the best German design of the classic period is the 540K Special. Opulent curves, lavish use of bright metal trim and slightly oversized body hardware combine to unforgettable effect. The car¡¯s proportions, with the radiator well behind the front-wheel centreline, with high waist and roll-up windows make it clear that this is a very sporty and modern construction. There were many bodies available on the 540K chassis, but the Special Roadster was the most expensive and today is the most desired of all. Only thirty-six cars were built to this design, although a number of other two seat convertibles were available on the same chassis.

The straight-eight engine produced 115 hp, but when the supercharger was engaged, another 65 hp was available, and the 180 hp in the 1930s was a towering achievement. The examples of this car change hands today for millions of pounds is fully justified by the extraordinary attention to every detail ¨C as well as by the fact that they are genuinely satisfying to drive, even in modern apparent in its dynamics as in its magnificent appearance.
